The Hong Kong Way Statement
In 1984, the United Kingdom and China signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration, which guarantees Hong Kong’s a high degree of autonomy, rights and freedoms and life-style to remain unchanged for 50 years.
Despite these promises, the Chinese Government has repeatedly and aggressively intervened in Hong Kong affairs since the transfer of sovereignty in 1997. These include the attempts to pass the National Security Bill ('Article 23') in 2003 and implement national education with an intent to indoctrinate state ideology in 2012. In addition, the decision made by PRC's Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on 31 August 2014 has deprived Hong Kong citizens of their right to dual universal suffrage as stated in the Basic Law. During the Causeway Bay Bookstore disappearance cases in 2015, Chinese law enforcement agents crossed the border to Hong Kong and unlawfully abducted Hong Kong citizens to China for lengthy extrajudicial detention. In 2016, the authorities disqualified six directly-elected lawmakers, imposed political screening and obsoleted existing political organization. In 2018, a co-location arrangement is introduced for Chinese jurisdiction to be practiced in the “mainland port area” in the city's downtown. In face of the Extradition Bill amendments in 2019, millions of Hongkongers speak up against police brutality that violates international protocols and standard, indiscriminate violence inflicted by the triads and the alleged police-triad collusion.
With these in the background, on 23 August 2019 which marked the 30th Anniversary of the Baltic Way, we formed the “Hong Kong Way” to fight for our promised rights to a high degree of autonomy, democracy, freedom and our way of life.
On this day, we formed human chains along the Island Line, the Tsuen Wan Line and the Kwun Tong Line among other locations in the city. Hand in hand, we created a 60km-long human chain, symbolizing HongKongers’ unwavering unity between “the peaceful” and “the valiant” and our determination to never surrender.
We cordially urge people around the world, governments of different nations and Chinese citizens to stand with HongKongers. This is more than just a political issue; it is also a matter of conscience, calling for the need to safeguard human rights and universal values. We sincerely hope that all nations and Chinese citizens can urge the Chinese Government to uphold the Sino-British Joint Declaration and fulfill the promises listed in the Basic Law, in order for Hongkongers to enjoy the legitimate rights to a high degree of autonomy, democracy, freedom and their way of life.
We hereby reaffirm that all the five principle demands must be met, not one less:
1. Implement dual universal suffrage immediately
2. Establish an independent investigation committee to probe police violence
3. Drop all charges against the protesters, release the arrested persons and guarantee no political retaliation
4. Retract the characterization of the protests as “riots”
5. Withdraw the extradition bill through formal procedures
This is the last chance to reverse the blighted fall of Hong Kong.
Dear Hongkongers, dear world, the clock is ticking.
To be or not to be, It’s NOW or never.
Stand with Hong Kong. Speak up for the oppressed. |
