「一寸光陰一寸金，寸金難買寸光陰。」

解釋：(諺語)比喻時間的寶貴。元˙史九敬˙莊周夢˙第二折：一寸光陰一寸金，持將此物寄知音。三寶太監西洋記通俗演義˙第十一回：可嘆一寸光陰一寸金，寸金難買寸光陰。寸金使盡金還在，過去光陰那裡尋？

這句話的出處還必須提到王貞白這首詩。新版《辭源》"寸陰"條，引用的出處是元代同恕《送陳嘉會》詩:"盡歡菽水晨昏事，一寸光陰一寸金。"其實，早在唐代的王貞白就讀于廬山五老峰下的白鹿洞時，便寫了"一寸光陰一寸金"這一名句。

讀書不覺已春深， 一寸光陰一寸金。
不是道人來引笑， 周情孔思正追尋。

王貞白，字有道，信州永丰(今江西廣丰縣)人，昭宗乾宁2年(895年)登進士第，7年后始授校書郎，后退居治學著述，勤奮不輟，不复出仕，其品德和學問均為時人推祟。他文思敏捷，才華卓絕，是晚唐頗負盛名的詩人。
